A birthday card made by hand usually seems more personal than a regular greeting card, and this book offers children many opportunities to make something special for their Grandma. It has a range of birthday-themed designs, such as Grandma enjoying cake and candles, as well as flowers, balloons, presents, hearts, cupcakes and messages like “Happy Birthday Grandma” and “Best Grandma Ever”. A number of the designs centre on Grandma while others show the children giving her flowers or birthday gifts.

Children can select a page that reminds them of their own grandmother and personalise it by using her favourite colours, for example by colouring in a birthday cake with those shades, making a vibrant bunch of flowers, decorating the balloons in various colours, or having the birthday lettering stand out.

It is possible to colour each design directly on line as a simple digital activity. Children who prefer to use crayons, coloured pencils or markers can alternatively download and print a page to colour by hand. A completed picture can then be put into a birthday card, given to Grandma as a handmade birthday present, or be displayed together with other birthday decorations.

There isn't one correct method for coloring these pages; the children might go with realistic colours, draw a bright rainbow-style birthday scene, or just pick the colours that Grandma likes. As a result, each completed page comes across as a bit different and personal to the child who made it.
